Children have been part of a safe and welcoming online community working together to author a book, one chapter at a time. They have come up with an exciting, realistic fiction/adventure story set in a present day big city, centered around a very topical event!
Just heading into its seventh year in business, Kids for Kids Books has published more than 25,000 students, including the creative work of students In Ontario, Nova Scotia and Alberta - through its school-based Young Author Publishing Adventure Program.

Local literacy enthusiast Sheryl Lubbock, founder of Kids for Kids Books, says teachers, parents, and kids have become so internet savvy that it was time to take the “literacy energizing” Young Author Publishing Adventure idea online. “It’s all about getting kids excited about reading and writing; when you add a chance to become a published author, you peak students’ interest and inspire them to add that bit of extra effort.”
“Kids will practice creative thinking, planning, reading, writing, and editing,” she says. “They may not know they’re building essential literacy skills, but they certainly will be.”
When the online authoring project kicked off on October 19, children logged in with their teacher, librarian, or parent to vote on the type of story, the setting, and the characters. Once the scene was set, participating students wrote what they thought should be the next chapter of the story. Entries were evaluated by the team at Kids for Kids Books, with a new chapter posted every two weeks or so.
“Kids know what kids like to read. Our young authors prove that all the time. When children read what their peers have written they become engaged quickly and the interest stays strong. You should see them all plop right down and start reading when their school’s book gets delivered!”
